Adding Life to Days

Jean’s 8 hour sponsored silence highlights partner’s speech difficulties

Nottinghamshire local Jean Blacow is determined to stay silent all day on Friday 9th December, in support of her partner Alan, who has a brain tumour which affects his speech and ability to form words.

Jean said: “I see Alan’s interactions changing each day. I see him wanting to join in conversations, or make a comment to start one, and not be able to because he cannot say the words. I hear him practising in the morning until he gets a word right. I am going to try so hard to put myself in his position for just 8 hours.”

Jean’s sponsored silence is raising money for Nottinghamshire Hospice, where Alan attends the Day Therapy twice a week. Through a mix of social activities, complementary therapies, counselling and medical care, the Hospice supports local people affected by life-limiting conditions like Alan’s, with compassion, respect and understanding.

“The Hospice is for here and now, and I see first-hand what company and solace it gives, either at Day Therapy or in the homes of those nearing the last months of their lives. 3 course meals, copious cups of tea, support for the carers too and so much friendliness, kindness and humour,” Jean continued.

Jean’s Sponsored Silence begins at 10.30am at Nottinghamshire Hospice, moving to her secondhand bookshop, Books and Pieces in West End Arcade, Nottingham from 12pm – 2pm. The day finishes up at the King William IV (known as the ‘King Billy’) pub in Eyre Street from 4.30 – 6.30pm, where there will be a quiz compiled by Jean, and hot dogs and mushy peas for sale.

Jean added that, as a naturally talkative person, the challenge will be tough for her: “I am going to be so out of my comfort zone and from the reactions I have got from announcing my choice of marathon, I know it is the right one!”

To sponsor Jean, go to her JustGiving page or you can join in the fun and donate on the day at Books and Pieces or in the King Billy.
