Clare's MMW 2009 Story!

Clare and Janis from Daycare“Most people would be wearing fancy dress, we were told. And someone said we ought to go in uniform so we combined the two and went in fancy dress nurses outfits. How original! Isn’t it strange how different makes of uniform can look so different on two different people? I ended up with the frumpy one tarted up with the fishnets.

It was a lovely dry evening and the participants were many! There was good entertainment, music, dancing, stilt walkers, a juggler and much more, to keep us amused and warm as it got quite chilly later. There were facilities for hot and cold drinks beforehand and a burger wagon for those who had not had time to eat. I had been fed with energy foods from my kind husband to avoid fainting with hunger without a choccy bar close at hand!

Our Angel The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone was friendly and chatty. There was a drama group dressed up as 101 Dalmatians and Cruella de Vil keeping them in check! Snow white was there and our own angel, Beverley Brooks, MBE, our Chief Executive, who brought the devil with her!

Janis and I, being staff, were asked to lead the way (an official requirement) - to control the front line - let no-one past. Easier said than done when the young fit walkers are surging ahead, determined to cross that ‘finish’ line first. "Whoa, stay back" we cried as we attempted to control the masses.

My big mistake no. 1 - in an attempt to make the outfit amusing I had attired myself in fishnet tight which had the tendency to slip down (I hate tights at the best of times) so I had to hold them up with some large elastic pants which I had bought for a pantomime many years ago.

Needless to say, they were a little tight, no, they were VERY tight and the circulation to my legs was a tad compromised.

My big mistake no. 2 - was to try and keep up with my team leader who is slimmer and obviously far sportier than me, and who marches like a soldier. AND she didn’t have the tight pants on over her tights …….!”
