Karl Alexander Minibus Appeal
Two years ago Karl Alexander, one of our youngest patients, sadly died. Before his death, Karl made his family aware of his wish that they should try to provide an additional minibus for Nottinghamshire Hospice.
This final wish was born out of the fact that on several occasions, whilst Karl was in need of our help, we were unable to provide the transport that he so much needed. This was due to the immense pressure on our transport fleet.Karl made it clear that he really didn’t want other patients to experience similar disappointments in the future, and so made his sister promise that she would ensure the necessary funding was raised to finance a third vehicle. | In response, Teddy, Karl’s father and Lisa, Karl’s sister, decided to do everything they could to raise the £32,000 necessary to purchase an additional minibus for the Hospice. They have undertaken collections at local supermarkets, arranged a formal dinner in Karl’s name and even provided local shoppers with some lively musical entertainment. All their efforts have paid off - the minibus has now arrived and the patients’ long wait for a ride in the lovely new vehicle is over! | The new Nottinghamshire Hospice minibus! Teddy and Pamela Alexander would like to thank the many people who gave up their time to assist them in raising money for the Karl Alexander Mini Bus Appeal: - The Nottingham and Radcliffe Lions, The West Bridgford Masons, Aston Villa Football Club, Lord and the Ladies of Papplewick & Linby
- Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco who permitted Johnnie, Jan, Pennie, Steve and Sue Steeples and ourselves from the George Formby Society to play our ukuleles outside their stores and the hundreds of shoppers who donated money while we played
A big 'Thank You' also goes to... - Eddie and Avril Fearon from Radcliffe-on-Trent for their Garden Parties
- Sue Mills of Niche Hairdressing Salon for running in the Nottingham Marathon
- Brian and Margaret Huskinson with the bagpipes
And finally, thank you to Amanda Bowman from Saga Radio and the Nottingham Evening Post for the much needed publicity they gave us during the Appeal. If you would like to find out more about the appeal and see pictures of the new Minibus, click here to watch the report shown on the ITV Local News. During the past year, the other Hospice minibus has also caused us immense patient transport problems as it has developed many faults. It seems to have spent more time in the repair garage than on the road.As a result, we have applied to three charitable trusts asking for support. They have been so moved by Karl’s story that in total they have made us grants totalling £28,000. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the Boots Charitable Trust who contributed £15,000, the Thomas Farr Charity who granted us £5,000 and an anonymous trust donation of £8,000.This means that we now have almost enough money to order the other new minibus. If you would like to make a donation towards the £4000 still needed for us to make this important purchase, then please contact Sue Fyleman, our Legacy and Trust Fundraiser, on 0115 910 1008.
