We have a Bereavement Support Group that meets on the last Saturday of each month, an annual 'Forget-me-not' day and support the annual ‘Light up a Life’ celebrations during December.
We are all likely to suffer loss at some point in our lives, whether it is the loss of a friend or loved one, a family pet, or simply the ability to function in the way we are used to.
At the Hospice, bereavement support is an integral part of the service we offer to patients and carers, working with multi-faith chaplaincy support and counselling.
There are several forms of support available:
We offer two formal support meetings which are held 4 and 8 months following bereavement. These aim to provide an opportunity for remembering a loved one, while emphasising the normality of the grief process. These meetings are facilitated by a member of the chaplaincy team.
We also meet informally on the last Saturday of each month between 10.30am and 12.30pm. This offers family, friends and carers an opportunity to meet with the team in a safe, relaxed environment, and to share their feelings and experiences with others who have been bereaved, over a cup of tea or coffee. Over the last year almost 200 people have joined us, with mutual support and new friendships being the outcome for many.
Both these meetings are held at the Hospice.
We also offer support by telephone, and home visits can be arranged.
Those patients and relatives in need of more formal support can be referred to our Counselling Service at any time.
We have our annual ‘Forget-me-Not’ day on the last Saturday in May, when we invite families to join us at the Hospice to plant forget-me-not seeds in our ‘blue’ garden.
We also support the annual ‘Light up a Life’ celebrations held during December.
