Adding Life to Days

Big Night In brings live music to living rooms in lockdown

Notts musicians are putting together an evening of jazz, swing and acoustic sounds including video and live performances on Saturday to raise funds for Nottinghamshire Hospice.

Professional musician Roger Bird, lead vocalist of Jazz and Swing band Mood Indigo, will be co-presenting the Big Night In and performing tunes from the Jazz Swing era alongside Ben Hickling who will sing covers spanning the last four decades.

Dubbed ‘Crooner of the County’, Roger, who has a background in healthcare and has seen first-hand the benefits of hospice care, said: “We’re all facing challenges right now but those working in the hospice and those benefitting from their services are especially challenged.  I’ve seen the difference hospice care makes at such a raw emotional time in people’s lives.

“This is where performing artists can help. We’re all used to performing all over the UK and internationally, and we have time on our hands right now, so it’s a no-brainer. Let’s hope we can raise some money.”

Also taking part are nationally acclaimed Jazz singer and Pianist Wendy Kirland, veteran acoustic artist Richie Muir, singer-song-writer Holly Fallon and Doyenne of the Notts music scene Tee Dymond.

Aga Kelly, Corporate Engagement Officer at Nottinghamshire Hospice, who organised the event, says: “This is a unique opportunity to hear some of the finest of Nottingham’s music scene through video and live performances. It promises to be a great night in!

“We hope you’ll join us to enjoy some fabulous sounds and support our work in providing crucial palliative care for patients across Nottinghamshire which is especially important at the current time. Big thanks to Roger and the other musicians for giving up their time to take part.”

To access the event, keep an eye on the Nottinghamshire Hospice Facebook page from 7.50pm on Saturday the 9th May. The live stream will appear on the page at 8pm.

Nottinghamshire Hospice is anticipating a loss in funding of £150,000 due to shop closures and event cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It recently launched its Forget Us Not appeal to address this shortfall. The Big Night In is one of a series of online events being organised to raise funds during lockdown. Find out more about the appeal here.
