Sherwood sunset calendar shows community support for hospice

A Sherwood artist and photographer has put together a series of stunning sunset scenes to create a 2021 calendar to raise funds for Nottinghamshire Hospice.

Richard Johnson wanted to create something beautiful as an antidote to Coronavirus gloom so he enlisted 11 other Sherwood-based photographers to contribute images to the calendar. Each page features a sunset shot in the local area.

Richard, who worked for 20 years at EON before setting up as an artist and local historian said: “I wanted to remind people that the word ‘corona’ relates to the sun and not just some nasty virus. I put a post on the Sherwood Community Facebook page and got a great response from the local community. The majority of the photos are taken by amateurs, all based in Sherwood.

“I asked people on the post which charity they’d like to raise money for and Nottinghamshire Hospice was the most popular choice.”

The calendar, expected to be printed this week, will be on sale at £8.00 through the Sherwood in Nottingham Community Facebook page. All proceeds will come to the hospice.

The project received a grant of £300 from the Sherwood Business Centre who wanted to support a local charity, and Graphic Designer Peter Duffy, a friend of Richard’s, designed the calendar free of charge.

Community support

This is not the first time members of the Sherwood community have clubbed together to support the hospice. During the Hoodwinked 2018 Sculpture Trail, residents crowdfunded to buy two robin sculptures at auction – proceeds of which came to the hospice. Since then the community has held bucket collections to raise funds.

Rebecca Taylor, Community Fundraiser at Nottinghamshire Hospice, said: “The sunset calendar is a wonderful community project and all the images are beautiful.

“We’re so grateful to Richard, Peter and all the photographers for contributing their time and talents, and to the Sherwood Business Centre for their generous support. Sherwood has an amazing sense of community with a great track record for supporting the hospice and we’re delighted they have chosen to fundraise again through this project.”
